Jared Powell is a Gold Coast based Physiotherapis t who is currently completing his PhD in shoulder pain at Bond University, where he is also a visiting lecturer and tutor. Shoulder pain is an enormous burn in society with half of the population experiencing shoulder pain in any given calendar year. It’s the third most common complaint that general practitioners hear from their patients and for those who have suffered from shoulder pain you know what an impact it can have on your daily function and your overall well-being.

1. Tendinopathy Partial Thickness Tear
2. Tendinopathy Full Thickness Tear
Distinction of Rotator Cuff Tear
1. Full thickness rotator cuff tear in traumatic fashion will need to have an orthopaedic review.
2. If it’s a degenerative rotator cuff tear it can be managed conservatively.
Symptoms
1. Pain in the intro lateral – front side part of the shoulder.
2. Pain in the evening when lying on the affected side.
3. Painful rotation with both neutral and 90 degrees.
Recommendation for shoulder pain patients
1. Re-assure patients.
2. Give a prognosis.
3. Give one progressive exercise that they can do.
Recommendation for Frozen Shoulder Pain
1. Have injection.
2. Get physiotherapist to get the arm moving.
Categories of Secondary Frozen Shoulder
1. Intrinsic – long term rotator cuff pain
2. Extrinsic – has neck pain or broken collar bone
3. Systemic Bunch – diabetic and thyroid issues, hypertensive as well
